Snagit vs iShot: enterprise power vs one-time utility (2026)
Snagit is the Windows-era default for screenshots, now a subscription product from a company that sells to IT departments. iShot is the opposite philosophy: one Mac, one purchase. The right pick depends almost entirely on who's paying and how many machines there are.

TechSmith moved Snagit to a subscription-only model with Snagit 2025 — perpetual licenses are no longer sold for new versions. At the official store price of $39 per user per year, three years of use costs multiples of what a one-time Mac utility costs for life.
That math is fine for a company expensing it. Snagit genuinely earns it there: cross-platform support, a mature screenshot editor built for documentation, and a vendor that answers support tickets. For an individual on a Mac, you're renting an office printer to print your own homework.

Where it falls short
- Subscription forever: stop paying, stop using it (that's the definition of the model since 2025).
- Heavy and slow next to Mac-native apps; the UI shows its age.

The verdict
Choose Snagit when a company standard: cross-platform docs, IT-deployed, receipt-expensed. It's the right tool for that.
Choose iShot for personal Mac use: capture, text extraction, translation, scroll capture, recording, with no renewal email ever. For one person on a Mac, the recurring fee is the only thing standing between you and a cheaper answer.
